Pompadours: Queen of Beautiful Fish in Aquarium

Pompadours, or Discus (means sphere, which comes from the body’s
appearance) is categorized to Cilhilidae. Pompadours’ origin are in the Amazon’ river basin in South America along the slow stream and shallow location. Pompadours like to stay under the root or the opaque bush.
In terms of the appearance, Pompadours are categorized to Cichilidae. Their shapes look like a dish and flat like Pterophyllum. The front and back fin arrange into a long row and end at the tail. There are some patterns and colors on their body up to the type. Their origin is in the Amazon in South America . The biggest size is not larger than 7 inches. They like to live in the slow stream and near overcrowd bushes. The ph of water is between 4.6 – 7.5. There are three types; Symphysodon aequifasciatus (divided into three sub types; Symphysodon aequifasciatus axelrodi ,Symphysodon aequifasciatus aequifasciatus, Symphysodon aequifasciatus haraldi), Symphysodon Discus, and Symphysodon tarzoo, which is a new type established in August 2007.
This fish is one of the very beautiful fresh-water fish. It is deserve with the designation “Queen of the fish in the aquarium”. Nowadays, there is a development to be more colorful than natural, such as Snake-Skin, five-tone, Rainbow-Skin, Blue Diamond, Dusty pompadour, etc. (In my opinion, I especially like Rainbow one and Snake-Skinn Pompadour most, but are others very beautiful? Pompadour’s appearance is round like dish, small mouth, neatly and slowly movement. The full-grown size is around 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) long. There are patterns and intensive color like sea fish, which are very beautiful. However, sometime, there are some little fish in the market which are colorful like full-grown one. That may occur unnaturally color-stimulation by any processes. .
There are many breeds of Pompadours which are very popular now. For instance, soid color (Blue Diamond, Blue Sky and Red-Eye, Snow White, Redthercoiz, Red & White, etc), and spotted-color which the origin came from Green Pompadour such as Snake-Skin, spotted color through the body. But, nowadays, breed developers in many countries has developed more colorful spot. Some pompadours have ring spots like jaguar. These are developed from “Royal Blue” and “Royal Green”, very popular in the recent time.
Pompadours like tranquil, It isn’t good to let they live with other kinds of fish or too much Pompadour in the same aquarium. Normally, they are not aggressive, different from others in the same species, except in the breed season. In order that if they live in nature, they will be grudge and the Captain will be aggressive, bully at others. Especially in the narrow place, they don’t like to live with other kinds and always bite each other. However, Pompadours can be raised with Tetra and small Catfish either.
